ELECTRONIC PRESCRIPTIONS A large number of GPs are now writing Electronic Prescriptions. They will transmit the prescription electronically via the internet. You will not then get a paper prescription. Hopefully the prescription will be ready when you reach the pharmacy. You will have to nominate which pharmacy the GP sends the prescription to. This is supposed to be your free choice. Your doctor must not recommend any pharmacy to you. We hope you will nominate your local pharmacy for dispensing prescriptions so that the local pharmacy remains viable. A number of doctors nowadays have a financial interest in a pharmacy but they are not allowed to recommend any pharmacy to a patient. It remains your free choice. Remember that if patients start nominating a distant pharmacy then the local pharmacy will not be there when you need that urgent medicine and can not wait for it to be delivered. We ask all patients to use their local pharmacy and as the phrase goes “USE IT OR LOSE IT”
